and have been around both all of my life. I think my exposure level would be considered more than a small sample size.
A few questions: Do you know what the "Birthday Party" is in this context ? Do you know where and when it is held ?
The movie depicts the existential anxiety felt by the Apollo participants, focusing on Neil Armstrong. His personal story and sacrifices are used as a metaphor for what the nation as a whole endured. 2.5yrs before 7/69 we lost 3 men on the launchpad...everyone knew what was at stake, and there were more than a few informed observers who felt the mission could end in spectacular failure. Imagine the collective feeling of an entire nation watching the mission in real time, knowing it could end in a split second, and realizing there was not a damn thing anyone could do. Everyone was invested in this mission, from the crew and their families, everyone in mission control, down to the man on the street. These guys were heroes. Every boy wanted to grow up to be an astronaut, every woman wanted to sleep with them. Planting the Flag was validation for the sacrifices. It wasn't xenophobia, white supremacy etc. It was a symbol of what a united society could accomplish if deeply committed.
That said- given your wonder at the nature of flight, did you every see or read "The Right Stuff" ?
