Exactly - a guilty pleasure of entertainment isn't such a bad thing - and sure the Oscars are an over-the-top extravagance of indulgence but so what?
If you don't like it don't watch it. Why rain on other people's parade?
The movie industry employs a LOT of people in all kinds of industries and the resulting films and TV shows have inspired thousands of people in other fields (The Star Trek franchise alone was a genesis to the smartphone and other current tech in our society).
Personally speaking I am not the biggest fan of turning "art" into a competition and why I rarely pit artists against each other.
But then I suppose it's not a competition - just a voting booth. The fact that one film got the most votes doesn't mean it's better.
And at least these votes have no direct influence on your finances or your personal life.
