Yup, I thought about going for the heat gun, but I think I've got it working. On the main processor board there mus be some kind of fault. If I remove one of the four mounting screws, it seems to work fine, cover on or off.A close inspection of both sides of the board hasn't revealed anything, even under magnification. As you can imagine, it is a densely packed board with surface mount devices on both sides.
Anyway, the board is supported well---even at the corner with the screw removed. And, since I don't have the proper equipment to work on this type of PCB (I prefer pin-point super-heated air), I believe that I will just leave the screw out for the time being.
I'll tell you, though, it must be a hair-line fault, because the board looks perfect. At least I can play with my new DIO now!
