With a CRT, continued long-term use of a 4X3 ratio picture on a 16X9 screen *will* cause phosphor burn.
This will happen sooner if contrast and brightness levels are high, but will happen at any watchable picture level eventually.
I saw a Vision III that had the 4X3 pattern burned into the phosphors after only 400 hrs.
One remedy that *may* work: turn on the set/projector and put up a blank white screen. Turn down the contrast almost all the way down (you just need a trickle of voltage) and leave it on for 24 hrs.
The only way to tell if you have burn-in is to put up a full white screen. If you do, you'll see a darker area that corresponds to the 4x3 area. In normal viewing, you'd never see it--unless you burn the CNN or Fox news logos into the phosphors!
