Hi There - I strongly suggest careful listening to the Onkyo. I have a '696 that is a couple of years old, and which I think was replaced by the '701. I have been into separates for decades, but when I set up a home theatre, I really needed the convenience of a dedicated A/V receiver. I am so happy with my Onkyo -its sound is sweet, very dynamic, and has revealed soundstaging with my Maggie 1.6s (now residing in a dedicated 2-ch audio only system) that my separates system cannot approach. I truly wish I could figure that one out, but in any case, the Onkyo is a VERY serious piece of equipment. Yamaha is known for its "house sound" which is somewhat appealing to many folks. I go for purity myself. Also - the Onkyo is a VERY strong 100 watts - it measures far in excess of its rated power and is built like a tank. Currently, I'm using the '696 to drive Vandersteen 2Ci's - WOW!! Not bad for a $700 or so investment.Happy Listening! Joe
