I "had" the HD-931 Samsung......note I say had. The picture "upconverted" on any RPTV w/hdtv is "good" not excellent. In the progressive mode using the new chip on the HD-931, it isn't excellent, it does however enhance every flaw that movies coming out on DVD have. Region 1 native 480p upconverted or supposedly upconverted isn't really, in the reality of movie viewing format, all the Samsung did was to give a "way" to directly try to cut out deinterlace then convert it back.There are players using better technology and using RGB composite that overall give a better picture.
Here is what we noted, we've got 3 HDTV televisions.....the Samsung HDTV we got cheap, cheap compared to the others is a unit we bought in 2003, it has DVI.....we moved the tv to be bedroom, the TV is just that bad. I figured it was the fact it was only a $2000 tv but it was the DVD player. It took hooking it up to each tv......in our home theatre in the basement theatre room which was where we'd planned on using the new Samsung, it looked terrible on a professionally tuned Mitsubishi. I liken the Samsung HD-931 to one of those players in the sub $100 class except it had Faroujda FL2300 which was supposed to be getting closer to DVD perfection....what a terrible bunch of technical support people in NJ......they told me it was my television, hence the reason I hooked it up to the Samsung TV.....FINALLY, after moving up the line of technicians, I finally found where they tested the unit, it is specifically made for INVAR SHADOW MASK....or tube tv...
I quoted their site touting the DVI connection and Faroujda....I have been an a/v and I might add a PC guru for 20 years, usually have to have the newest.
Ok, ok....I won't keep going, however, I say spend your money wisely and READ different home theatre reviews. The HD-931 we had......well, I traded it on the forums at HOME THEATRE SPOT....I traded it on an older Yamaha surround for my son.
I think in the in HDTV, wait... wait on a DVD player unless yours is outdated then look to older Panny brands or my choice Denon. Denon and Panasonic evidently from the internal parts of the player on the Denon units to have done what Toyota did with Camry.....vs. ES300
They took a great unit by Panasonic, which by the way there are many 2003 or almost every upper 2002 Panasonic, seeing the market dwindle on prices vs. people wanting quality, Panasonic smartly got with Denon.....Same scenario as Camry which toyota sought to rename and upscale it by name of ES300 as an exampleSo what would or what should you do???? Easy, buy a higher end DVD which has great reviews, no chroma isues.....for my cheap tv, I thought of the OLDER yet new Denon 1600, it ranked way above the Samsung and I might add, the Samy was hooked DVI and t he Denon hooked composite.
On a professionally tuned television.....(hope you know what that is) ... the picture in order to get a Samsung correct it would in testing make a tv have too much red push. So you'd have to redo your settings. With the Denon, a spectacular picutre....so good I went out and bought the 2900. So it used to be Sony in DVD, now it is all Denon. There are others......
The moral of the letter which I purposefully tried to give an open opinion is...
Stick to reviewed models, not because of a feature, often the feature isn't compatible, or bluntly, it is junk. Hey, the HD931 looked excellent but I was really disappointed. It didn't have any support on board for DTS either.
I better stop, it is beginning to sound like i'm bashing the HD931, I'm not....I'm just saying for the money there are better units.
