***So I may be an idiot, but I don't think so...***I din't mean to imply you were an idiot. If I did, I apologize.
***Went through the manuals. THe 7700 as a reference player does not have an onboard decoder.***
The 7700 being a "reference" player has nothing to do with it. It not having an onboard decoder has nothing to do with it either. (acctually ALL DVD players have an onboard decoder. Its just that some players do not feature 5.1 analog outs, only 2 chanel stereo. This is a common mistake though and nitpicking)
***It is the only SONY model without an onboard 5.1 decoder.***
This is also not true (actually you mean to say that it doesn't have 5.1 analog outputs). The 7000, 3000, 300, and 330 all do not have 5.1 analog outputs (there may be others, but I am not up on the current Sony line)
***It will read 5.1 and DTS, it will output them via a coax or optical,***
Yep just like all DVD players for DD and most for DTS.
***but it will only do the D/A conversion for two channel (CD playback)***
Again this is not true. It should very well downmix a 5.1 soundtrack to 2 chanel stereo on the analog outputs. It is part of the DVD spec which enables people with stereo only and older prologic only systems to use DVD without upgrading the entire system. Try what one of the other respondendts suggested and check the menu setting. If your 7700 can't/won't downmix, and you are certain you are not missing anything and are operating it correctly then it is defective.
