Port design usually smooths out low frequency resonances and the stuffing etc is rather critical.I still suspect your basic problem is one of room resonances. Removing the bass driver out of circuit might assist but I guess it is unlikely to bring about a satisfactory cure. You look like being faced with tube traps and other room devices, something I'm unfamiliar with. Try a post on the speaker board for further help. I empathise with your fruustration. Wooly resonant overprominant bass is hard to the ears and is unfortunately too prevalent in commercial theatres. We certainly do not want it at home!
