... could make the problem worse by raising the resonant frequency of the cabinet. Port design usually smooths out low frequency resonances and the stuffing etc is rather critical.

I still suspect your basic problem is one of room resonances. Removing the bass driver out of circuit might assist but I guess it is unlikely to bring about a satisfactory cure. You look like being faced with tube traps and other room devices, something I'm unfamiliar with. Try a post on the speaker board for further help. I empathise with your fruustration. Wooly resonant overprominant bass is hard to the ears and is unfortunately too prevalent in commercial theatres. We certainly do not want it at home!
