"..over kill for home theater..." ? You can never have enough bass for HT.

If anything, some subs are overkill for music, but that's why you can (usually) dial down the bass response.

My subwoofer is used strictly for the HT LFE effects. I didn't like the slight loss of transparency when I put a (non-REL) sub between the preamp and amp for music.

I've heard bigger, more expensive subs in a much smaller room and I've loved the bass impact. It made my sub "feel" very wimpish in comparison. I need to add a 2nd sub because of the room size but I also might upgrade, two (2) REL Brittania B1s are on the wish list; may even be suitable for music.
