As the first high-def players get ready to ship, consumers get ready for battle. The format war for high-definition DVD player supremacy has been labelled reminiscent of the VHS and Beta battle of the late ’70s.
FUTURE OF DVD ... Blu-Ray DVD format movies are seen at this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The stand-off comes as the next generation of home entertainment is ushered in this month under the epithet “high-def DVD,†and the fighters are Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
But whether or not this blitzkrieg of stay-at-home theatre warrants a comparison to that of VHS versus Beta is far from decided.
Cass Maggio is the administrator of the High Def Forum, a site he launched nearly two years ago to stay on top of the world of HD.
He wonders if people even have the attention spans these days to follow this war.
“There are so many new and exciting options available … whether Blu-Ray or HD-DVD declares victory, it will be short lived relative to VHS,†says Maggio.
