Anyone who "invests" in a consumer media format is a fool

A consumer media format is not an investment. It is highly unlikely to appreciate in value - in fact, it's more likely to do just the opposite. These are ultimately disposable devices and media that are (or should be) purchased with DISPOSABLE income.

Nothing is forever. All formats die. All formats become obsolete. Expecting anything else is stupid. Proceeding with any other mindset is stupid. If buying a disposable consumer toy has the potential to cause you mental pain or anguish, there's something wrong with you.

So, if your concern is "investment," then you shouldn't buy Blu-ray discs and players either. After all, it's only going to last a few years before it's replaced by The Next Big Thing In Consumer Entertainment.

If you find no value in being entertained, then don't buy anything. If you only find pleasure in buying things that hold value, buy gold, not consumer electronics and media. If you want something that will last forever, buy diamonds, not consumer electronics an media.

OTOH, if you look at these devices and formats as a medium for delivering entertainment RIGHT NOW, and don't get caught up in "investing" or "supporting," or other such psychotic emotional nonsense, then spending some disposable income on something you can enjoy RIGHT NOW is not foolish.
