Thanks for your suggestions.As one last option before getting the Satellite installer back to look at the set top box that I was having problems with S-Video on I rang the technical assistance department of the service provider.
Easy fix - go into the menu, type in the installers code (which they gave me), change the setting for video output from 'composite' to 's-video' and BINGO - a brilliant picture through the amp/tv s-video connection.
Also, picked up an AC3 Demodulator for around USD140 including tax and overnight delivery - got the Yamaha APD-1.
