Sorry to delay in responding but I've been travelling.All players are progressive at one point internally and then interlaced at another from what I've read. The progressive players take the interlaced image and deinterlace it digitally and this is the real appeal of them (contrasted with the Faroudja that does it by taking an analog signal and dealing with the integration step). As far as I know, there isn't any purely "progressive" dvd player out there because of hardware limitations imposed by the manufacturers. I'm not sure about using a PC as a dvd player and how this issue is handled, but I suspect it is the same. Again, the advantage of the progressive player is that it deals with things all digitally and this is a much easier way to handle deinterlacing.
Is the Faroudja worth it? Depends on your set-up in my view. I have a Sony g70 projector (8") and use the Faroudja 2200 and I'm very pleased by the results. If you are using a LCD or DLP and want to consider a Faroudja, then you might look at their new one that is specifically set at the factory to match your projector (and it shaves off a little cost compared with the 2200). If you have a 9" crt, then you really need a better scaler/quadrupler (DWIN transcanner is said to be good, and the Faroudja 3000 and above series are incredible...quality AND expense).
