Satelite SD PQ is better than digital cable SD PQ, but not by much. They both stink and are both highly compressed. On my 60 inch HDTV, regular programs such as "Friend" and "Queen of Hearts" were unwatcheable due to poor PQ of DISH network.Just simple over-the-air digital signal via OTA antenna looks MUCH better for the same programs. You Must get OTA antenna for half-way-decent SD digital PQ.
HD is fantastic no matter where, cable, DISH, OTA and basically indistinguisheable. But you will still want OTA antenna for OTA HD b/c DISH HD package will not give you NBC, ABC, UPN, or local HD programming (CBS IS possible in some areas).
As far as DISH HDTV receiver you are getting, it's likely an 811. It does "output" up to 1080i, but the above-mentioned crappy compressed SD digital channels look just as crappy "upsampled."
