Nice review. I concur that the movie was definalty not just about Sean Penn's character. It was about the human condition, dealing with terrible situations like you menioned. But I don't agree that all the events that happened to these people can be chalked up to fate. Some of these characters made bad decisions and were sruggling with the ramifications. Also I don't think the way the story went from past to present to past etc. really did anything except to make it seem more artistic. I'm not sure if jumping around in time was supposed to be some type of foreshadowing, or maybe it was symbolic of the character's lives as a bunch of random events (scenes) colliding with other character's random life scenes? Actually I like this latter idea better, but I really don't think that was the director's intention.

Anyway, I'll go on the record (again) to say that I did enjoy the film. I didn't think Penn was all that convincing, as a lot of others seem to, but nevertheless I'm glad that I saw the movie.
