i have no rationale for choosing, but can i vote? i vote for the rotel.i have the rotel 985. i have rotel cd players, dvd players which i use as cd players, preamps, and turntable, and they are all fantastic values to me. i would not buy anything in these categories over a rotel unless i heard for myself that it was better. people thinking another brand is better is not good enough for me. i'd want to hear it myself.
but basically i'm taking about rotel's best in their product line.i think rotel makes superb preamps. the 995 is really an excellent stero preamp with an excellent phono stage. the a/v 985 seems similarly capable as a stereo preamp, and the processor is definitely better than the pioneer elite i had.
i'm less familar with the various a/v processors. i had a chance to get an anthem 2 processor at a fabulous price but i decided not to do it because i couldn't do a direct comparison with my 985, and from what i could gather i might not have improved things. i'm told that anthem makes some of the best a/v processors, and i may have considered the deal more if it had been the anthem 20. but i decided to hold my cards unless i can really hear what's better.
i have a yamaha inexpensive cd player that i paid 100 for. it's really pretty decent. i have a yamaha cd burner, but i haven't had a chance to use it yet.
i also have the rotel 965 processor which is a step or two down from the best processor they make. i cannot comment about it as a processor, but it does not seem to be quite as good as a stereo preamp than their better models.
i'm not into ss amplification so i cannot comment about that aspect.
generally all i'm saying is that i believe from my experiences that rotel makes very good products at very good prices.
