You can try one of two things:
- The DVD player should have a menu providing various options including speaker setup. You should select a 2 speaker setup in this menu - the default may be 5.1 which is why you are probably getting only the L + R channel info and the center and surround speakers are being cut off. When you choose a 2 speaker setup in this menu the 5.1 sound gets downmixed to 2 channels and so you end up getting all the info.

- when you play DVDs most DVDs have audio options in their menu. You need to select stereo or 2channel here.
