Re: dvd sound.

Hi circlip,

Assuming your DVD is set to play into a 2 channel system and you are using the PCM audio tracks on the DVD, what you are describing might be normal. First thing to do is to check the settings on your DVD player to ensure they're where you think they are.

The only part of your note I find of concern is having to turn up the volume for DVDs "to almost the maximum". The settings may be suspect.

Keep in mind that most modern CDs have the signal compressed to raise the average level. The reasons for this are beyond the scope of this message but nonetheless, this is what record producers, labels and mastering engineers do.

There are exceptions, usually the best sounding CDs, where you won't notice as large a discrepancy in level from your DVDs, but generally speaking, you will have to turn movies up more than you have to turn up music CDs (or conversely, you'll have to turn those CDs down).
