Thanks for the advice. I don't currently have a scope, but had already built an RCA switch (both hot and ground), and built in about 6dB of attenuation to the side that goes to the preamp, thinking that overdriving might be the cause. It attenuates but distortion is still there. So I am betting that it is coming out of the DVD player distorted. (I used a 10K and a 4.7K resistor, I think... would have to check, but I know I calculated it for 6dB).By "piece of junk", you mean the DVD player? Yeah, it was cheap so I may have to replace it when I can get around to it. Anything relatively low-priced that you would recommend?
