I don't really know the difference between -RW and +RW, but there is a post already about that.
As for the hard drive; supposedly you can rewrite on a DVD-RW about 1000 times. Basically I just leave a disc in there and erase it when I'm done. I have no interest in permanently recording anything (and if I did I'd want it on disk anyway... I think).
So for me personally I see no advantage to the internal hard drive unless you need more than a couple hours recorded without returning to your house to replace the DVD-RW. And even if I need this I just put the recorder on long play.
