Another matter of opinion, of course. I remember the Duelists quite well, except not well enough to rank the director. At the time I thought it was entertaining - Keitel was superb, as usual - but not more than that.

You are right, I do have high standards for directors and these are not set by me, but by dozens if not hundreds of directors before Scott. To that standard his films don't measure up. We are supposed to be talking about someone making the Best Film, after all? I think Scott can only deserve any attention if those others are either not known or ignored. Like my sis playing violin might impress someone who has never heard Oistrakh.

His accomplishments? I have not seen his whole roster, but the Alien, Thelma, Bladerunner I would personally NEVER watch voluntarily. I find them all objectionable to high degree, demeaning as an attempt at art. As I usually say - why waste your time watching this stuff when I still have not seen all good films?

Perhaps inept is not the right word here. Perhaps he unfortunately is good at making bad films.
