...NTSC was the only one of the three designed according to good optical engineering principles. The Committee made the vertical resolution equal to the horizontal, yielding the maximum from any given bandwidth. Granted there were some color stability problems, but those have been since fixed.The last few years have produced such improvements that I've seen some NTSC pictures as good as HD, so one wonders if PAL and SECAM may have been inherently less capable of expansion.
Also not to forget, European sound remained in mono for a decade at least after we got stereo here.
