fare, even the higher quality stuff, for some time. American indie stuff, largely, too.
The very language of N. American film has become stale, ritualistic, and subconsciously cannabilistic.
Example: THE dramatic moment. Notice how artificially almost all its movies approach THOSE moments? How the "star" is highlighted? The bigger the star, the more we get those Herculean-effort moments.
Hell, in "The Departed" one gets the definite impression Nicholson couldn't ask someone for directions to the john w/out arching his eyebrows several times, looking this way and that several times, and grinning like The Joker.
In fact, in that movie, we didn't get any continuity. What we got was Leonard's heavily lobbied touchstone scenes, Marky Mark's, Baldwin's, Grinnin' Jacks, etc.
The story was incidental to all these "stars" radiant explosions.
