Whatever year it was that the CES High End exhibits were in the Alexis Park (and correct me if I am wrong, but I think the exhibitor was Herb Reichert, who now writes for Stereophile), my friend Jeff Mitchell and I visited the Audio Note importer's room.
The loudspeaker being played was a "bookshelf" loudspeaker about the size of an old KLH or Advent large-woofer sealed box. IIRC, MSRP was $19,000 the pair--for bookshelf loudspeakers circa 1997.
I asked if we could hear something I brought along, which was a CDR of Jery Bruck's recording of the Joe Wheeler completion of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, in the cleaned-up-score version that had been done for the Colorado MahlerFest.
Jeff and I stood there (IIRC, the speakers were in horizontal disposition and were placed higher than is normal), totally caught up in the music.
It's a cliche (klee-shay), but, there was a Magic to the Midrange. So, we forgot about the lack of true low bass, and the fact that the dynamics were not true-to-life.
Now, I am sure that those loudspeakers are long gone. And I have never seen "Audio Note" and "Great Value for Money" in the same paragraph. (Until a few moments ago, that is!)
So, I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think I'd go there, even if I won the Lottery.
My latest loudspeaker design, for a client, uses a Beyma 3-inch Air Motion Transformer combined with a Purifi woofer-mid with the "Hair-Scrunchi" woofer surround. I post a picture just for discussion--that loudspeaker is not for sale!!! That is a 5.25-inch woofer (pretty much the same size as the LS3/5A woofer) with passive radiators on both cabinet sides. The enclosure is 12.75 inches tall.
I think that the Purifi "Hair-Scrunchi" woofer surround and Thin Ply Carbon Diaphragms, especially Metamodal TPCD diaphragms, are the most significant improvements in loudspeaker technology in more than 20 years.
The link is to a review where I explain TPCD technology.
My thought being, if I were shopping today for myself, without prejudging the outcome, I'd start my search with whatever retail-market loudspeakers I could find with TPCD or Purify technology.
Best of luck,
john
