Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Do not purchase without hearing based upon your SF issues

If you had issues with your SF bass performance, you could be disappointed with a costly mistake without experiencing AN performance and their very specific and by design required placement.

Also the AN design is just a 40 year old designed Snell j ( and Mission and jPW and Heco and ..)

Golden rule-ly wide lively box with a 8 inch midbass and dome tweeter.

AN has doggedly stuck to this basic design even when most of the world has moved on from the shortcomings and followed a new fashion ( narrow cabinets with smaller drivers for midrange)

I personally have a great respect for and still make 8 inch two ways. With the right midbass driver, they can deliver meaningful representation of full range that 6 1/2 and 7 inch drivers can't

But Audio Note have eschewed some f the real strengths of an 8 inch two way by sticking to wide front baffle, extremely lively cabinets (claiming its desired) and little baffle step and very subdued bass that is DESIGNED. And REQUIRED to be pushed into corners and back walls to get a representation of bass.

All of that with $10,000 price tags.

Oh yes they have full stories to explain why, Virgin Nuns from Upper Elbonia who grow their hair long and silky, plate with silver, wind the voice coils while singing Gregorian Chants. Athenian divers fetching 20 meter down sea grass to dry n pulp to make cones and ...-.

But at the end of the day you have a moderate sized 8 inch driver with modern refinements, but not esoteric in materials ( silver don't count) or overall construction. Yes details details details to achieve a goal but hardly breakthroughs to warrant price tags.

They Eked out a bit more efficiency in their line and make effort to maintain an easy load and impedance wise, but tend to overstate their efficiency. After most reviews that do point out some issues with box colorations, of efficiency claims ( hardly alone in that) and passable high frequency, the Loyals and the Manufacturers cry foul or unrefined listeners.

I have heard multiple AN offerings at many many shows. I would equate the goal of the unit is to be a presentation of a single wide and driver in a boomy box of the 1980 s. I find them extremely frustrating as put up as the Premium Example of an 8 inch two way. Great midband but at a cost of equal balance of bass and high frequency. A lot to give up for a few more db of effeciency

There are several out of the very few 8 inch two ways that are more forgiving of placement, have a better balance of performance bass mid treble but at a cost of a couple db and a ultra focus on midband performance. I also can give you a link to home contractor plans for a 8 inch two way floorstander that completely out performs the AN in almost every aspect and would cost $8000 less but that would be hearsay

So the question is can you determine if the placement requirements and AN sound signature is going to be an improvement over your existing setup based upon a set of Inmates giving you their experiences.

I've put a link to a Stereophile article that put Snell J and AN in a comparison event.

(EDIT - After rereading the above, clear I'm harsh on AN for my reasons but I still STRONGLY suggest that you must experience first hand a not buy cause you have another AN product or Our opinion)
