Critics often overlook sci-fi so you should still be able to rake in a paycheck by sticking to the foreign and/or 'artistic' type films in your reviews. You know, the ones most people haven't heard of, and even after they win awards, they linger in theatres for 2 more weeks and people still don't see 'em. Is there a good reason why those types of movies aren't taken seriously by critics or the academy? LOTR being a recent exception. Oh yeah, I also really liked Minority Report being a big Cruise and Sydow fan.
