The challenge is that I have many drives that I do not typically keep always connected. In fact I have too many drives for that to be practical
- or at least I always assumed it would be impractical. I doubt even the beefy power supply I installed in my current machine could power over a dozen drives reliably. So I am thinking:
1: get the unique hardware ID for each drive and label them physically so I can see which is which.
2: build an inventory using the hardware ID as part of the file metadata, since drive letters will change as different drives are connected and disconnected.
3:Build a search interface so I can query and analyze the inventory and know what is where and decide how I might reorganize.
4:Decide if I want to try and automate a reogranizer that would physically move files around from disk to disk based on the inventory and user input.#4 would be the tricky use case. 1-3 seem pretty straight forward as far as use case, not neccessarily the programming.
