RE: Help, what a mess!

Let's stop blaming software engineers or operating systems or the lack of applications for a moment.

Every project starts with thorough planning.

Identify what is actually messed up and how it all went south.
Laziness (lack of ambition) and carefulness are IMO usually the key drivers.

Based on your findings and conclusions define your new goals.

However. The 1st Q I'd ask myself:

Is it all worth it?

1. Getting a collection in order takes weeks (or years )
2. Maintaining and administrating a collection requires continuous efforts

Many people I know - not willing or able to comply - switched to commercial streaming services for these very reasons.

Let's talk about ambition.

A collection should be consistent in terms of having common

1. directory structure
2. file name structure
3. tag structure
4. image structure
5. file type

To achieve that you need to touch every single album and track.

I do know that most people skip the effort to get these factors in order.

However. I do think it's worth to build a rather small high quality collection that's yours then living with terrabytes of mess.
Start with e.g. 200 albums. Your favorites. That's doable.
Suddenly you'll notice the collection becomes yours. Every album you'll touch and shape becomes yours.

Quality beats quantity.

Good luck.
