Logically speaking we are thinkng the same.
And there is a lot to be said for manual effort when it clearly works and is relatively fool proof. But data in spreadsheet probably impedes the second phase (automated physical file reorganizing based on data and user input). It is a reasonable idea though and maybe I should do it just as an exercise to better understand how the data would look.
Since I was a Sql Server db programmer for many years. eventually anyway I would use DB vs. a spreadsheet. Tons of advantages - sorting, querying, adding additional metadata programmatically, on and on.
re #1. yep, I thought of that. But as shown in previous posting, powershell can get the manufacturer unique ID (and of course complete drive/directory/file listing into Sql Server DB) - likely in one line of code!
And why add metadata item (my own numeric drive identifier) that is functionally dependant e.g. "this always equates to that" on the manufacturers unique ID? Goes against all my training as a data modeler and DB programmer. If you curious why that is a bad thing, ask me or google.
